DESCRIPTION:Are you an artist or crafts person of any kind?  Then please bring some of your creations to display at our MUUC Arts &Crafts Fair!  It will take place  on the morning of Sunday\, January 27th\, before and after the Acts of Creation service being presented that morning by February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban).  Children as well as adults are welcome to display their creations (the service will be intergenerational\, so kids will stay for the entire service).  Please come to the church no later than 10:30 a.m. (preferably earlier) to set up your display.  While no sales of art will take place at church\, business cards may be collected for later follow-up.  Please email Heidi Gould (mqtuuadassist@gmail.com) if you want space for a display.

DESCRIPTION:Kids & Youth Pageant Santa Lucia Service \nShare in some of the authentic Swedish winter holiday traditions of Jul and Santa Lucia. The service at 11 am on Sunday\, Dec. 16th will include a beautiful procession of the “Queen of Light” and her candle-holding entourage\, including Starboys and gingerbread kids. There will be beautiful Swedish songs\, some history of the traditions\, gnomes\, predictions for the New Year with the classic tapping of the pepperkaker\, and the sharing of some traditional foods and beverage of the season\, like glogg\, saffron bread\, rice pudding\, and more. \nFor that Dec 16th service\, the kids and youth should all be there at 10:30 am\, if possible\, to get their pageant outfits on & to practice. Any kids 5 & under might wear anything brown\, and 6 & older\, can wear white. We’ll add the bling.

DESCRIPTION:“13th” – This is a 2016 American documentary by director Ava DuVernay\, which explores the “intersection of race\, justice\, and mass incarceration in the United States.  It takes its title from the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution\, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery\, with the exception of slavery as punishment for a crime. \nDuVernay contends that slavery has been perpetuated in practices since the end of the American Civil War through such actions as criminalizing behavior and enabling police to arrest poor freedmen and force them to work for the state under convict leasing; suppression of African Americans by disenfranchisement\, lynchings and Jim Crow; politicians declaring a war on drugs that weigh more heavily on minority communities and\, by the late 20th century\, mass incarceration of people of color in the United States. She examines the prison-industrial complex and the emerging detention-industrial complex\, demonstrating how much money is being made by corporations from such incarcerations. \n13th garnered acclaim from film critics and was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.

Laurie Bushbaum has just retired from full-time parish ministry after 33 years of service in Minnesota\, South Dakota\, and Wi. She loves to hike\, garden and create stuff.\nShe started quilting  at age 13 after inheriting an unfinished quilt from her great-grandmother. She is starting a new ministry called The Blue Altar\, with arts programming for UU congregations.\nShe and her husband live in Minneapolis and are the parents of 2 young adult UU’s.
